Hey, stuff is happening on my end so I'm not able to post much. I've noticed it's kind of quiet though, anything I could do to give it a kick that doesn't invovle a great deal of creative power on my end? Or is there quiet stuff going on that I haven't noticed?

Yeah, I've already taken advantage of that. I think you, myself and GreatBuddha [who is primarily on wikia due to simpler table interface and more activity] are the only ones using it and I'm the only one with original works in written in my language [though you and GB may have translated it yourselves]. I'd like to see a competition or some sort of stronger incentive for short stories/poems in order to draw people out and encourage them to try and use their languages to their fullest extent and share it with the rest of us, because in the words of Tolkien; "Volapük, Esperanto, Ido, Novial, &c, &c, are dead, far deader than ancient unused languages, because their authors never invented any Esperanto legends".

Even if it would only lead to small things like short stories, myths and rhymes that are only a few paragraphs long, it will help people get a fuller feel for the language and would make it easier for us to pick featured langs in the future.

Whist I approve of this project of yours, I disapprove of the intermixing of constructed language literature and the natural language texts. Texts in the previously pseudo-namespace "Translation", such as "The Tower of Babel" are in my opinion not to be categorised under the literature banner; they serve a different purpose, since they exist to promote the conlangers' translations of the same texts, for comparison.

People are more inclined to translate non-conlang literature, and many of the texts have become an institution to translate, say "Babel" and "The Lord's Prayer". There is a big chance that the literature category texts will live up to their name and simple be stored in the library for interested people to read. I therefore object to the intermixture of the two namespaces.

:I understand your concerns, yet I am not so sure creating another namespace is the way to go. I do not think creating 'translation only' and a 'conlang-only texts' would be beneficial, as it would split up text content (intended for translation) unnecessarily with prefixes when a simple category such as [[:Category:Translation exercises]] would do. I, following on what I perceive to be Fauxlosophe's intent, feel that both texts from natlangs and conlangs should be encouraged to be translated. Thus, separating it into a whole new namespace feels a bit overkill. I mean, it's literature. To assuage fears of conlangers not translating texts, I have started writing a few templates to "single out" the ''standard'' texts for translation.

:I have also modified a few templates to allow one to add one's language from the get-go as seen on [[Literature:Ishtar spoke to her father|Ishtar spoke to her father]]. It's not perfect as it currently just preloads the whole page but in a subpage, but it should help encourage people to translate texts. I also intend on adding a large section to [[Literature:Portal]] regarding translations, clarifying, and encouraging users to translate.

:I like the feel of the library and can see some definite strengths, but my intent was to find ways to encourage others to write original literature. I have to admit, I do really like the idea of breaking things down into glosses and translating what can be translated between conlangs; it creates a sense of shared community between our conlangs, however it wasn't my intent.

:I hoped to encourage con-texts with competitions, discussions in the forum and maybe some sort of mini-featuring on the main page like the audio for Kihammic. Most conlangs I've seen with poems/texts look like the lang was built around the poem and offer little actual info on the lang, while many very detailed languages here have little to no original text. I take a lot of my conlanging philosophy off of Tolkien and I think a conlang without a history and stories feels a little empty to me, so I'd love to see the wiki take steps in this direction. The "library" category elevates original work to an equal level is good for that [better than seeing it crammed in the back recesses anyway] which is what I thought your intent was. I'm a bit impartial towards a redivision but I really want to encourage a bit more exposure towards the original texts that were written, because compared to "translations", the "literature" category was a bit less visible and much less filled.

:So a challenge or competition there would be welcome [I'd try to come back and compose something new for it] since it would get people thinking/working outside of the linguist box and into the pretty words box. I'll sketch out something more detailed on the forums. Hey,

I just touched up [[Cwengâr]]'s page significantly, so it no longer reads like "Just like Fén except for these changes". My main goal with these pages is to make the language accessible and useable to someone willing to leaf through the page momentarily while they look up words. To that end could you do me a few favours in that regard; the first being to simply skim the page and offer advice where you can on improving it and the other being; would you be willing to try writing a sample of whatever you like based off the page and tell me any difficulties you encountered? I don't like imposing my lang on others but I could use perspective on what needs to be made clearer. Lastly, do you know the history of the Irish Broad/Slender development? Is it just a very consistant sound change rule of these letters infront of Soft and Hard vowels? I've peaked around a few times to try and figure out the story but the best guess I have is that it's the hard/soft C and G rule applied most of the letters in the language. If you know any more than that I'd really appreciate it,

:From what I can remember from reading about the Goidelic languages, the development of full on palatalisation contrast happened somewhere between Primitive Irish and Early Old Irish and has to do with well consonants acquiring a palatal secondary articulation near front vowels. It's a very similar process to what happened in many Romance languages (<c> = [t͡ʃ ~ ʃ ~ s ~ θ ~ k ~ kʲ] as you rightly mentioned but more pervasive, think Russian (which has slender vs broad in most consonants – they only term it soft vs hard) and other Slavic languages! I will take a proper look at Cwengâr now and comment on its talk page when done. Hey! Sorry for the late answer but I've been on vacation (as you may or may not have noticed) :P 'twas a hilarious video. One of my favourite HH clip is the one with the Greek philosophers singing. As I mentioned to Waahlis, I have the third relay text kicking about untranslated on the wiki. He's offered me third up and I'd like to ask you [if you are interested] to be the first one listed up to translate. The reason for this is that I like the job that you did with my other major Cwengâr text and I feel like you have a sense of how to be liberal with a text that will be pretty useful if this does get up and running; I aimed to have a poetic metre and metaphor/double meaning that I feel like you'd be most comfortable playing with.

Yeah, I've already taken advantage of that. I think you, myself and GreatBuddha [who is primarily on wikia due to simpler table interface and more activity] are the only ones using it and I'm the only one with original works in written in my language [though you and GB may have translated it yourselves]. I'd like to see a competition or some sort of stronger incentive for short stories/poems in order to draw people out and encourage them to try and use their languages to their fullest extent and share it with the rest of us, because in the words of Tolkien; "Volapük, Esperanto, Ido, Novial, &c, &c, are dead, far deader than ancient unused languages, because their authors never invented any Esperanto legends".

Even if it would only lead to small things like short stories, myths and rhymes that are only a few paragraphs long, it will help people get a fuller feel for the language and would make it easier for us to pick featured langs in the future.

Whist I approve of this project of yours, I disapprove of the intermixing of constructed language literature and the natural language texts. Texts in the previously pseudo-namespace "Translation", such as "The Tower of Babel" are in my opinion not to be categorised under the literature banner; they serve a different purpose, since they exist to promote the conlangers' translations of the same texts, for comparison.

People are more inclined to translate non-conlang literature, and many of the texts have become an institution to translate, say "Babel" and "The Lord's Prayer". There is a big chance that the literature category texts will live up to their name and simple be stored in the library for interested people to read. I therefore object to the intermixture of the two namespaces.

:I understand your concerns, yet I am not so sure creating another namespace is the way to go. I do not think creating 'translation only' and a 'conlang-only texts' would be beneficial, as it would split up text content (intended for translation) unnecessarily with prefixes when a simple category such as [[:Category:Translation exercises]] would do. I, following on what I perceive to be Fauxlosophe's intent, feel that both texts from natlangs and conlangs should be encouraged to be translated. Thus, separating it into a whole new namespace feels a bit overkill. I mean, it's literature. To assuage fears of conlangers not translating texts, I have started writing a few templates to "single out" the ''standard'' texts for translation.

:I like the feel of the library and can see some definite strengths, but my intent was to find ways to encourage others to write original literature. I have to admit, I do really like the idea of breaking things down into glosses and translating what can be translated between conlangs; it creates a sense of shared community between our conlangs, however it wasn't my intent.

:I hoped to encourage con-texts with competitions, discussions in the forum and maybe some sort of mini-featuring on the main page like the audio for Kihammic. Most conlangs I've seen with poems/texts look like the lang was built around the poem and offer little actual info on the lang, while many very detailed languages here have little to no original text. I take a lot of my conlanging philosophy off of Tolkien and I think a conlang without a history and stories feels a little empty to me, so I'd love to see the wiki take steps in this direction. The "library" category elevates original work to an equal level is good for that [better than seeing it crammed in the back recesses anyway] which is what I thought your intent was. I'm a bit impartial towards a redivision but I really want to encourage a bit more exposure towards the original texts that were written, because compared to "translations", the "literature" category was a bit less visible and much less filled.

:So a challenge or competition there would be welcome [I'd try to come back and compose something new for it] since it would get people thinking/working outside of the linguist box and into the pretty words box. I'll sketch out something more detailed on the forums. Hey,

I just touched up [[Cwengâr]]'s page significantly, so it no longer reads like "Just like Fén except for these changes". My main goal with these pages is to make the language accessible and useable to someone willing to leaf through the page momentarily while they look up words. To that end could you do me a few favours in that regard; the first being to simply skim the page and offer advice where you can on improving it and the other being; would you be willing to try writing a sample of whatever you like based off the page and tell me any difficulties you encountered? I don't like imposing my lang on others but I could use perspective on what needs to be made clearer. Lastly, do you know the history of the Irish Broad/Slender development? Is it just a very consistant sound change rule of these letters infront of Soft and Hard vowels? I've peaked around a few times to try and figure out the story but the best guess I have is that it's the hard/soft C and G rule applied most of the letters in the language. If you know any more than that I'd really appreciate it,

:From what I can remember from reading about the Goidelic languages, the development of full on palatalisation contrast happened somewhere between Primitive Irish and Early Old Irish and has to do with well consonants acquiring a palatal secondary articulation near front vowels. It's a very similar process to what happened in many Romance languages (<c> = [t͡ʃ ~ ʃ ~ s ~ θ ~ k ~ kʲ] as you rightly mentioned but more pervasive, think Russian (which has slender vs broad in most consonants – they only term it soft vs hard) and other Slavic languages! I will take a proper look at Cwengâr now and comment on its talk page when done. ALright, this is written as a poem, with, if I recall AABB rhyme scheme and 9 syllable lines. It was in the wake of a major event in Cwelhenev history, but the details aren't too clear. If you want to mess with details to keep what you think is the message or a metre that works for your language, then I highly encourage it!

Cwengâr is a really fluid mutating language, with gender and a bunch of other mean tricks that makes it difficult even for me at times.

Masc/Fem agreement is also a thing, where a stop at the end of a word can be voiced or devoiced depending on the start of the next but I didn't noticed too much here, still be on guard for it if the end of the word doesn't quite match the gloss.

Also important to note is that possession is marked in the possessed object rather than the possessor, the noun or pronoun will just precede whatever is possessed.

I should have gotten a screen grab but it seems to have resolved itself. If you're interested, just incase this is a recurring error;

*The main page itself was the only thing visible; the side bar [Mainpage, Announcements, Recent Changes... Toolbox, Other], tabs [Mainpage, Discussion, Read, Edit... Go, Search] and top bar [My Talk, My Preferences, My Watchlist... etc] were simply blank; there was no visible text or anything where they should have been.

*The end of the page also cut off; nothing after certain sections were accessible and the browser treated it as if the page ended there in the middle of the article, not allowing me to scroll further down; thus the Category section was not accessible.

*Attempting to link to the areas cut off from the navigation box or using ctrl+f to find a word would give no response [or no result in the case of ctrl+f], though the navigation box would link me directly to the parts of the article as it would normally on other pages.

Hasn't happened to me before on any other forums so I suspect it may have been an error with Linguifex, possibly due to my trying to access these pages through history or favourites? Either way, it is resolved now.

I want to create a completely new language to use while I work on my Germanic conlang. I want it to be totally unrelated to any living languages but still go with the old European Nominative-Accusative fusional deal. Try a hawaiian esque free vowel no dipthong system, but replace all stops with a lot of taps, trills, nasals, and approximants like you see in Indian languages. Add tone to give it a songlike quality.
As for the writing system, look at the alphabets of southern india, they were written on palm leaves which would rip if the script was too rough. Also make all your sounds voiced, voiceless sounds interrupt the hum of speech.
Of course, I'm defining flow as sounds which do not interrupt the hum of voiced speech. You might not actually know what what you want when you think of something so subjective as how a language "rools of the tongue", in which case, you are the only one who can decide.

Greatbuddha makes a few great points. My personal trick for this is to try to imitate an orthography of a language that I really like, be it a conlang or natlang, and make a completely different grammar. Think of it as a car, you paint it, add a few features, but under the bonnet, no one grasps its complexity!

I'd say you should do this: Take a shorter text and then semi-translate it into a few different sketchlangs, all of them with different orthographies and phonologies, then see which one you like the best, or mix them up! ::I was thinking of Dhannuá, since both draw on celtic elements. Generally though, it's the fact that you've already done a translation of The Wildman and the King, which I felt got the flavour of what I was going for, means you have some experience rooting through what I feel is a rather difficult conlang and one which might be even more difficult for someone going into it blind with a language that has a vocabuluary better suited for a futuristic or contemporary setting, in the same way that I tend to have trouble translating really contemporary elements. But I'm definitely okay with whatever, so Skājamāl suits me if that's what has your interest at the moment.

I want to create a completely new language to use while I work on my Germanic conlang. Try a hawaiian esque free vowel no dipthong system, but replace all stops with a lot of taps, trills, nasals, and approximants like you see in Indian languages. Add tone to give it a songlike quality.
As for the writing system, look at the alphabets of southern india, they were written on palm leaves which would rip if the script was too rough. Also make all your sounds voiced, voiceless sounds interrupt the hum of speech.
Of course, I'm defining flow as sounds which do not interrupt the hum of voiced speech. You might not actually know what what you want when you think of something so subjective as how a language "rools of the tongue", in which case, you are the only one who can decide.

Greatbuddha makes a few great points. My personal trick for this is to try to imitate an orthography of a language that I really like, be it a conlang or natlang, and make a completely different grammar. Think of it as a car, you paint it, add a few features, but under the bonnet, no one grasps its complexity!

I'd say you should do this: Take a shorter text and then semi-translate it into a few different sketchlangs, all of them with different orthographies and phonologies, then see which one you like the best, or mix them up! ::I was refering to Dhannuá, but I think it's more a matter of flavour and etc. Both draw on celtic elements and the translation of The Wildman and the King I felt got the flavour of what I was going for which might be more difficult for someone going into it with language that has a vocabuluary better suited for a futuristic or contemporary setting, in the same way that I tend to have trouble translating really contemporary elements. But I'm definitely okay with whatever, so Skājamāl suits me if that's what has your interest at the moment.

It is Scandinavian-inspired, but not necessarily based off of any single one of those languages. I'm currently learning Danish for an exchange trip next year, although I was supposed to go to Norway, so I possess a knowledge of both of those languages. The '''Second Linguifex Relay''' is an upcoming conlang relay, a game of conlingual telephone, on Linguifex. Succeeding the [[First Linguifex Relay|Saola Peadid]] relay, starting in [[Valian]], the second will be written in [[Ris]]. The relaymaster will be [[User:Waahlis|Waahlis]]. The '''Second Linguifex Relay''' introduces a periodical change in terminology; this relay will use the terms ''seat'' and ''whisper'' and rather than ''slot'' and ''torch''.

The game is similar to [[w:Chinese Whispers|Chinese Whispers]]. The procedure is simple, you will receive a conlang text, a ''whisper'', from the previous ''seat'' with an interlinear/gloss which you are to translate into your own conlang and add information so that the next person can decipher it and make a new translation. You will have '''48''' hours from the time of having received the whisper to prepare a translation of it into your conlang, gloss it and then send it to the next person in the chain. You are free to include either a glossary and grammar notes or an interlinear (or both!). The choice is up to you, but it is always recommended to at least add an interlinear.

In the event that you fail to whisper within your allotted 48 hours, the turn will skip your seat and go to the next participant.

The starting date will be set after the seats have been taken. Everyone is welcome to partake, but for reasons of convenience, an account on Linguifex is required (as the posting of the material will be on talk pages and such). Every person is restricted to one entry, but the choice of conlang is up to them. In the case that two people chose the same language, a first-come first-served basis will be adopted (unless, say the language creator chooses to join in).

==Introduction==

This is an early outline of what Toryl may look like. Everything here is pending the completion of So'raan.

===General information===

Toryl is my first attempt at a properly mongrel language and represents something of an analogue to the Romans in this universe. While it maintains differences here and there, it draws three major similarities to old Rome within the setting; Both are major Empires and share a similar climate. However, the closest similarity is a linguistic one as it shares the same linguistic relation to the vaguely Celtic Galavic languages with many loanwords and academic influences owed to the the vaguely Hellenistic collection of City States who speak various dialects of "So'raan".

Here the similarities end, as Toryl holds many isolating features that make it at best resemble Romantic languages [particularly French and Spanish] with elements of Celtic languages and only very minimal Latin influence. Vocabularly is of course unit and specific gramatical elements are tweaked as while the Romantic aesthetic is cultivated, the goal is for it to remain a consistant part of this universe.

The vocabulary posted here will focus on "Pyrrityl" terms, however much like the Romantic-Germanic in English, the Pyrrityl vocabulary has been replaced in many parts with So'raan and so many examples/terms posted here may later be replaced to emphasize that. This cannot take place though until after So'raan is developed.

For those interested in an in universe explaination, this might be handwaved as "Proto-Toryl" or representing an early dialect of Old Toryl which was less effected by the loanwords. Both cases would predate the written word for the Toryl which was introduced with the arrival of the So'raan.

===Toryl history===

The beginning of Toryl history is difficult to trace, though ultimately it seems to have developed on the arrival of So'raan settlers to the city of Torroel. The settlers adopted the language of the natives through necessity but introduced loan words and some grammatical innovations. Aided by the organization and arms of the settlers, the Toryl united several of the Pyrittyl tribes and city states. They would eventually gather enough force to route the Galav tribes, even conquering the Loerngyyl. Since then, the Toryl have been expanding, both North, where at the time of the story, they have recently completed conquering all of Cwelâr and Eastwards where they now hold many of the once proud states of their So'raan ancestors.

Will map Phonetics onto spelling. It's slightly more friendly to unacquinated eye than the Galavic languages due to the lack of mutations, but vowels and certain exceptions will still be charted.

Toryl is slightly less unfriendly to consonants than Fén and will not always delete them if they occur within sequence between consonants.

"n'g" is an exception, usually the "g" will be dropped.

Singular Verbs where the final vowel is a, e, ae, y, yy or y are feminine, if the final vowel is o, u or oe, aa, then the vowel is masculine. Pluralization may change the final vowel, but the gender remains that of the singular case.

This is an error that I'm considering rectifying within Cwengâr since their two sound plural comes off as obtuse to me. If I keep the Fén plural, I may reverse this entirely, so that it moves to be broader and more open.

==Introduction==

This is an early outline of what Toryl may look like. Everything here is pending the completion of So'raan.

===General information===

Toryl is my first attempt at a properly mongrel language and represents something of an analogue to the Romans in this universe. While it maintains differences here and there, it draws three major similarities to old Rome within the setting; Both are major Empires and share a similar climate. However, the closest similarity is a linguistic one as it shares the same linguistic relation to the vaguely Celtic Galavic languages with many loanwords and academic influences owed to the the vaguely Hellenistic collection of City States who speak various dialects of "So'raan".

Here the similarities end, as Toryl holds many isolating features that make it at best resemble Romantic languages [particularly French and Spanish] with elements of Celtic languages and only very minimal Latin influence. Vocabularly is of course unit and specific gramatical elements are tweaked as while the Romantic aesthetic is cultivated, the goal is for it to remain a consistant part of this universe.

The vocabulary posted here will focus on "Pyrrityl" terms, however much like the Romantic-Germanic in English, the Pyrrityl vocabulary has been replaced in many parts with So'raan and so many examples/terms posted here may later be replaced to emphasize that. This cannot take place though until after So'raan is developed.

For those interested in an in universe explaination, this might be handwaved as "Proto-Toryl" or representing an early dialect of Old Toryl which was less effected by the loanwords. Both cases would predate the written word for the Toryl which was introduced with the arrival of the So'raan.

===Toryl history===

The beginning of Toryl history is difficult to trace, though ultimately it seems to have developed on the arrival of So'raan settlers to the city of Torroel. The settlers adopted the language of the natives through necessity but introduced loan words and some grammatical innovations. Aided by the organization and arms of the settlers, the Toryl united several of the Pyrittyl tribes and city states. They would eventually gather enough force to route the Galav tribes, even conquering the Loerngel. Since then, the Toryl have been expanding, both North, where at the time of the story, they have recently completed conquering all of Cwelâr and Eastwards where they now hold many of the once proud states of their So'raan ancestors.

The divide between Galavic language and Pyrittyl is a P/Q split, where in Pyrrityl kw and gw merged into p/b. The k sound would be reintroduced through So'raan but does not appear in words with Pyrrityl roots.

===Alphabet===

Will map Phonetics onto spelling. It's slightly more friendly to unacquinated eye than the Galavic languages due to the lack of mutations, but vowels and certain exceptions will still be charted.

===Phonotactics===

Toryl is slightly less unfriendly to consonants than Fén and will not always delete them if they occur within sequence between consonants.

"n'g" is an exception, usually the "g" will be dropped.

*[This is one of the few written sentances in Northern-Pyrittyl prior extinction and assimilation into Toryl, it is recorded by a contemporary who claims that this was a expression of those communities that refers to how people tend to get worked up over nothing and responding to the long standing claim that a thousand roads pass through Toryl.]

*Gender: Singular Verbs where the final vowel is a, e, ae, y, yy or y are feminine, if the final vowel is o, u or oe, aa, then the vowel is masculine. Pluralization may change the final vowel, but the gender remains that of the singular case.
*"aen" and "do" fill rolls of "un" and "de" in French [both one/a and from/possessive]
*Verb conjugations;
** Present -[n]o/u, -[n]e, -[n]ae/aa, -[s]is/ys, -[n]ar, -[h]os/yys
** Past- [n]or/ur, -[n]er, -[n]aer/aar, -[s]in/yn, -[n]an, -[h]on/yyn
** Future- [h]od/ud, -[n]ed, -[n]aed/aad, -[n]in/yd, -[n]ad, -[s]ot/yyd
[The vowels are related to the pronouns, the consonants are aesthetic and based on what seemed to sound fitting with them in order to have them be distinguishable]
*Adjective Ending: -il/-yl
*SVO order, though S is usually dropped except in third person where it needs to be indicated.
*Pluralization; Infixed ending;
**a->e->ae->yy
**o->oe/uy/aa->u->i/y->yy [o->oe->u->i->yy, other vowels are not pluralized to, only from]
**In Words ending in y in their singular form, an "a" is affixed to the word ending.
*Yes and No exist in Toryr and Pyrittyl languages, usually derived from the roots of "Yyd" [this] and "[n]ae" [negative copula]. Yyl an Ael in Toryl.
*Prepostions: daer, do, del, de, rel, kin, ru, kor, ke, ku, nir, etc, etc.
