Inherited from Old Carnian boloto, from Proto-Slavic *bolto. The shift of o > a is a result of contamination from South Slavic blato, originating in southern dialects and spreading northward through Central dialect into the standard. Compare Slovene blato and Serbo-Croatian blato.
