- for solo cantillation: prayer modes are small subsets of 11edo, 13edo, 22edo + no-limit JI, or 31edo + no-limit JI
- for harmonizing: for the "better" tunings, often uses jazzy extensions and enharmonic modifications in addition to meantone + otonal JI
- a capella: freer modulations, not necessarily melodic
